A US air hostess has revealed what crew members are really doing when they greet passengers on the way to their seats – as apparently, they’re doing more than welcoming you aboard.
TikTok user and flight attendant Kat Kamalani has shared a video revealing staff are determining what passengers are most fit to help out in case of an emergency.
“Have you ever walked on a plane and saw the flight attendants standing right here greeting you? Or the flight attendants walking up and down the aisle? she said in the viral video that has racked up more than 2.6 million views since it was shared Monday.

“Well, I’m about to tell you what we’re really doing,” she continued.
“So, when you’re walking on the airplane and you see our happy, smiling face, we’re actually looking you up and down and we are trying to find our A. B. P’s”
Kat then explains to her more than 588,000 followers, A. B. P’s are Able Body People capable of helping flight crew in case of a medical emergency, unexpected landing or security breach.” She said this often includes military personnel — easily identifiable as they are often invited to board planes ahead of other passengers — as well as pilots, firefighters, police, doctors and nurses.
That’s not all the hosties are looking for when they take in who is on their plane.
“We’re also looking at one more thing,” Kat goes on.
Besides “looking for things that don’t belong on the plane” – including disallowed liquids – she claimed attendants are checking for human trafficking.
“It happens a lot in the industry,” she explained. “Our passenger safety is our number one priority, so we’re just looking for things that look off.”
Kat often uses her TikTok account to share industry secrets and other titbits about her experience working as an air steward.
She previously went viral for listing the perks of the job, listing flying for free as the reason people want to be flight attendants in a video posted in February.
“Your spouse flies for free, your kids fly for free and even your parents fly for free. And if you don’t have a spouse, you can allot that to a companion – it doesn’t matter who.”
She also said passengers should never ask for anything using hot water, such as coffee or tea, explaining that this was because the tanks are never cleaned and also positioned in an undesirable location, right near the toilets.
