Dato’ Lau Beng Long, President of Sunway Healthcare Group, shared that SMC has focused on high-quality patient care. “As one of Malaysia’s leading quaternary and tertiary regional hospitals, we are committed to providing best-in-class care supported by internationally trained specialists and the latest technology. Every patient is important to us. Our strength is in formulating customized treatment plans for our patients to provide a ‘home away from home’ environment whereby they can enjoy hassle-free and worry-free care here. We are not only building good hospitals for today’s needs, we are also laying the foundation for great hospitals for generations to come,” commented Dato’ Lau.

“Health is a simple math formula – multiply, plus, minus, divide through our lifestyle habits. What we do here is we constantly strive to ‘add’ and ‘multiply’ the health status of our patients. When foreign patients come to our hospitals for treatment, they are often in advanced stages of cancer or have been misdiagnosed or given the wrong treatment. Families are in distress because they want their loved ones to recover. Our vision is to create a complete ecosystem from wellness and diagnosis to treatment and recovery by providing multidisciplinary care with advanced technology to assist patients in their treatment journey. To this end, we have launched an all-in-one 3D2N medical checkup cum leisure package with integrated offerings from Sunway Hotel and Sunway Lagoon, Sunway Sanctuary, targeted screening programs, digital PET-CT scan and other technologies to provide accurate diagnosis and targeted treatment, ” said Faith Tang, Assistant Director, International Business Development.

Awarded by the Frost & Sullivan 2021 and 2022 Malaysia Smart Hospital Company of the Year Awards, SMC has been at the forefront of adopting the latest technologies to achieve clinical excellence. SMC has also officially acquired the Positron Emission Tomography/Computed Tomography (PET/CT) digital system, uMI780. This makes SMC the first hospital in Southeast Asia to have this technology. Meanwhile, SMC is collaborating with United Imaging Healthcare (UIH) in presenting uMI780. Through this technology, SMC optimizes molecular imaging protocols using artificial intelligence (AI) model reconstruction in cancer diagnosis.

In 2021, Sunway Medical Centre acquired an additional state-of-the-art robotic surgery system. It made history by performing Malaysia’s first robot-assisted joint replacement surgery with the clinical outcome of faster recovery, less pain, and 80% of patients being able to walk without crutches during day 14 of follow-up compared to 20% of patients who underwent conventional surgery. In Dec 2022, Sunway Medical Centre commemorated the administration of one thousand robot-assisted surgeries. The hospital’s commitment to advanced surgical techniques and technology has performed more than 1800 robotic surgeries, offering patients faster recovery and reduced pain compared to conventional procedures.

These advancements have attracted Filipino medical tourists to Malaysia seeking cutting-edge surgical solutions. Sunway Medical Centre procured the highly advanced da Vinci Si Surgical System in 2016, and their latest addition, the da Vinci Xi 4th Generation Surgical System, was the first of its kind in the country when it was launched in January 2022. With its advanced surgical technology, the da Vinci Xi simplifies complex surgeries and enhances surgical performance, allowing SMC’s surgeons to have an extended range of motion and substantially improved vision while operating.
